Notes:

Aug. 27: Player start times now available.  For GU11 start times, see the schedule tab.

For info on Cornell tours, see the recent news tab.

UPDATE AUG. 25: You may still register to play in this event.  However, you will not be placed in the draw unless a higher ranked player withdraws.

If you want to maximize your chance of playing, you should enter now.  If you enter first, you will be first on the wait list.  If you enter and don't get in, you get a refund, except for the $10 online registration fee.  So your best bet to playing is to get first in line for any openings!

This tournament will be run by the same team as the Washington DC Gold tournaments.  If you haven't played that tournament, ask your friends about it.

The tournament will be held on two incredible campuses -- Cornell University and Hamilton College.  This is a bit like a split gold.  U17 and U19 will play at Cornell, and the U11, U13 and U15 age groups will play at Hamilton.  The squash courts at Cornell and Hamilton are about 82 miles apart and about a 1 hr 45 min. drive.

Our philosophy is to provide a great tournament experience and value.

  • We allow plenty of time for matches to ensure the tournament runs on time as much as possible
  • Provide more matches for player skill development (28 of a full draw's 32 players get 4 to 6 matches; regular golds give only 20 players 4+ matches)
  • Players get two chances at a top 10 fiinish, so if you fall in the consolations, you can still make the  9th/10th place match
  • Award more points for better players than at most Golds (our goal is to play from 1st to 18th places in a full draw. As of Aug. 12, at this point we can virtually guarantee, 1st to 12th, 17th/18th), plus 25th place (plate).  You get more points from winning 17th than from a 17-24 finish at a regular gold
  • Aim to start and end each day at reasonable times with a goal of finishing by 7 PM each day for U15 or younger and 9 PM for U17-U19)
  • Provide thorough information and excellent communication for the tournament, including discounted rates on quality hotels (see the hotels tab).

Our goal is to get everyone out by 2 PM Monday, but until we see the entries, please plan on being available until 3 PM.  (See the schedule tab for up-to-date information.)

This is your last chance to play a summer gold.  Summer golds allow you to take your best two summer results for your ranking.  While that sounds like a limit, it's not!.  Summer golds give you a great chance to pull up your ranking by improving on your top two results.  If you play more than two golds, US Squash guidelines say "In this case, the additional Gold tournaments will not count towards a player’s ranking average nor affect that player’s overall exposure count."  So it is great practice to play in summer golds!  It is also a good time to play up an age group if you will age out during the season.  This is your last chance to play a summer gold and set up your ranking for the coming season.

Transportation:

Cornell:  If you drive, it's a pretty drive and about 3.5 hours from Westchester NY, 3.5 hours from Valley Forge, PA, 5 hours from Cleveland, about 4 hours from Toronto, ON and about 4 hours 50 minutes from Rt. 128 near Boston or Timonium MD.  Ithaca Thomkins airport (ITH) is less than 15 minutes from the courts and has nonstop flights from Newark (United), Philadelphia (US Airways) and Detroit (Delta), with connections at these airports to hundreds of cities in the US.  There is also good nonstop service to Syracuse NY from many hub airports.  That airport is about an hour drive to the courts at Cornell.  Rochester's airport is about 1 hr. 50 mins to the courts.  Cornell provides a very nice express bus from the campus to its New York City campus.  The buses offer comfortable single and double seating for up to 32 passengers. Ample work-room, internet service, a well-stocked galley, and other much-requested amenities make the trip enjoyable and productive.  Express bus info and reservations here

Hamilton: The Syracuse airport is about 50 minutes to Hamilton.  The Albany airport is about 1 hr. 30 mins to Hamilton.  Amtrak services Utica, which is about 12 miles from the courts.  Click here for more information on directions and transportation.

NEWS:

Tournament hotels for the Cornell and Hamilton venues are now listed -- book early.

Campus Tours:

See the recent news tab for update info on tours of Cornell.

Hamilton College is an incredible place, and offers campus tours Friday at 11, 1, and 3.  Learn more here.

Cornell Tours.

We have arranged private tours of Cornell University for tournament players and their families.  Tours last one hour and depart from Day Hall.  Additionally, there are also tours open to the public.  These public tours are on Friday, August 29 at 9 AM, 11 AM, 1 PM and 3 PM and Saturday at 10:30 AM.  Cornell offers a general information session Saturday at 9 AM.  Friday info sessions are specific to each school (e.g., Engineering, Architecture, College of Human Ecology, etc.).  Much of the info session information is available online.

The private tours will be offered Friday at 5:45 PM, Saturday at 11:15 AM, 12:40 PM and 2:15 PM.  If you can only attend a Saturday tour, then depending on your draw here are my recommended times: GU17 -- 11:15 AM; GU19 -- 10:30 AM or 2:15 PM, BU17 -- 12:40 PM or 2:15 PM; and BU19 -- 10:30 AM or 2:15 PM.

Tours begin at the Information and Referral Center in the Day Hall lobby.  For GPS, use the street address of Day Hall on central campus at 144 East Ave., Ithaca, NY.  On weekends, some parking areas of campus are permit-restricted; student resident lots are restricted at all times. However, parking is available without charge in the parking garage and at some other campus lots. Please read and obey all posted signs carefully when parking.

I recommend you use the parking garage at 165 Hoy Road. Because it may take you extra time to get directions, get lost and then find Day Hall, please allow a minimum of 30 minutes to get from courts to the tour.  Better to arrive early. Getting back will be a lot faster.

You can access a campus map here.  There is a search box at the top of the map.  You can search for "Day Hall" to find the tour start and "Belkin Squash Courts" to find the tournament venue.

Summer Gold Tournaments

Players may use the points from only two (2) Gold tournaments held between and including the months of May through August.  This restriction applies whether a player is playing in a single age division or in multiple divisions during this period.  If a player plays in more than two Gold tournaments, that player’s top two point-earning events from the youngest age division tournaments will be used.  In this case, the additional Gold tournaments will not count towards a player’s ranking average nor affect that player’s overall exposure count.

If a player participates in three (3) or more tournaments over multiple age divisions and would like their points applied in the tournaments from the older age divisions instead of the younger, the player must email tournaments@ussquash.com to request the two (2) tournaments from which they wish points to apply to their ranking.

TOURNAMENT RULES

All US Squash Accredited tournaments will abide by the policies outlined here.

NOTE: In divisions that have players’ waitlisted, the 30 highest ranked players have gained entry into the tournament.  The remaining 2 players to gain entry into the event will be notified by within 48 hours of the release of the Cut List.  This is to allow a grace period for any potential registration errors.
