Gold

November 23-25, 2012

We’re looking forward to the fifth tournament at Deerfield’s new Dewey Squash Center. We have some 240 players coming from all over the country and as far away as Arizona and Texas.

We have over 550 matches to play on 10 courts in the space of 48 hours (with time off for sleep!). As you can imagine, with that many players and matches to be played, in some draws I’ve had to limit to three hours the times between players’ matches. Scheduling is tight so please be on time and flexible. If there are any concerns, please speak to me or a member of the Committee.

Below are a few details for the week-end:

1)      Directions: Go to Deerfield’s web site (www.deerfield.edu). At the very top of the page in the middle is “Contact or Visit Us.” Click on that phrase and go to “Driving Directions.” On the left column. Once you turn on to Albany Road, the gymnasium is a few hundred yards down on the left. There will be signs in the gymnasium directing you to the Dewey Squash Center. You may also be directed to park on the lower level below the Dewey Squash Center.

2)      Registration: Begins at 2:30 PM Friday in the Center. Please try to register a half hour before your first match as previous matches may be finished sooner than scheduled. There is no need to register again for succeeding matches.

3)      Draws: Posted in the Registration area. When a match is finished, leave the ball on the court, and the winner brings the score sheet back to the Registration desk and receives the score sheet for the next match on the same court. The winner and loser are responsible for refereeing that next match, even if it does not follow immediately. Be sure to check the draw for your next match time and court. Be there 15 minutes early. Remember that each player has a minimum of three matches so check the draws carefully.

4)      Scoring: We will use the PAR 11 system.

5)      Warm-up: Should be 5 minutes of alternating shots back and forth. No solo warm-ups up and down your own side wall.

6)      Referees: As mentioned the winner and loser referee the next match. Parents and others should not interfere in any way with the referees. If there’s a problem, find one of the tournament officials with a badge. Also, please be willing to help referee if needed, even if it’s not your scheduled match to referee. There may be some instances where very young players are scheduled to referee older players. We’ll try to anticipate those, but please see an official if there’s a problem. Referees are expected to concentrate and do the best job possible, exactly as you would wish those refereeing your match to do – that means no iPods or any other distractions.

7)      Locker Rooms:  Locker rooms will be available for showering and changing, but not lockers. Boys in #60; girls in #20. I’m not sure if towels will be available from the stock room (hampers for used towels will be in the locker rooms), but it’s probably a good idea to bring your own.

8)      Amenities: There are bathrooms and water fountains. Bring a change of clothes and warm-up suits to stay warm between matches and spectating. Gatorade will be on hand.

9)      Medical: We will have ice packs and a few bandages and wraps on hand.

10)  Belongings: Keep them near you as there will be lots of people milling around. Clothes, racquets, etc. can be easily misplaced.

11)  Food: We will be providing small breakfasts and larger lunches on Saturday & Sunday. Breakfasts will include juice, bagels, etc. but no coffee (to avoid any spills on the carpet). Parents, please get your own coffee at the inn or along the way. Lunch will be sandwiches, fruit etc. served in the reception area. Since the dining room will be closed, some other food options are below:

China Gourmet, 78 Mohawk Trail, Greenfield, 2.9 miles

Hope and Olive, 44 Hope Street, Greenfield, 3.6 miles

Greenfield Grille, 30 Federal Street, Greenfield, 3.7 miles

Elm Farm Bakery, 10 Elm Street, South Deerfield, 4.7 miles

Dunkin Donuts, 378 Federal Street, Greenfield, 4.9 miles

Holy Smokes BBQ Delicatessen, 52 Avenue A, Turners Falls, 5.2 miles

Blue Heron Restaurant, 112 North Main Street, Sunderland, 5.6 miles

12)  Shirts: Tournament shirts for all players will be given out at registration. Due to the large number of entrants, we may be short. If you don’t get a shirt, or you need a size that’s not available, let me know and we’ll include it in the supplemental order and mail it to you.

13)  Parking: Please use the large parking lot behind the gymnasium and enter through the back entrance.

14)  Telephone: If you need to reach Tom Poor during the tournament, his cell is: 617-851-0722.

15)  Parents and Coaches: On occasion we may need help at the desk or in refereeing. If you’re willing to help at times when your son/daughter is not playing, please let me know by e-mail or at the tournament.

16)  Finally, we are guests of Deerfield Academy. Please be courteous, neat and leave the facility better than we found it.

                                        Many thanks,

Tom Poor for the Mass Squash Junior Committee
