2013 Turkey Trot

At the ASC&D annual Turkey Trot tournament held Saturday, December 7th, on the splendid regulation international squash court, courtesy of C&S , youth was knocking at the proverbial door to victory. But, again, age and experience held firm in virtually all of the final match-ups. Moving from the cozy confines of the club’s court in east Keene proved energizing for all the combatants which included some participants from the Brattleboro Racquet Club. In the final Marc Ducharme fended off another spirited challenge from Josh Houle. Marc fought back from a 2 to 1 game deficit to win the last two games for the championship. The fiercely competitive contest included one long overtime game 14 – 12 which Josh won. Josh also added a spectacular between the legs shot for a winner. But, in the end, Marc’s relentless retrieving, strong “rails” and steely determination to keep the ball in play forcing errors from his opponent prevailed in the nearly hour long mach. In the battle for third place, Dave Stabler lost the first game to Henry Spindler and then roared back to win the next 3 to seize victory. The victory was all the more memorable because Dave had arrived back in Keene at nearly 3 am Saturday morning from a business trip. His first match was at 8:40 am. Dave observed, “There are priorities in life. Squash is one of them!” Only in the consolation final was youth served as new member Russ Cobb defeated Joe Greenwood 3 games to none. In fairness, Joe Greenwood had just won a marathon 5 game contest against Jim Rousmaniere that saw nearly every game go to full score and the 5th game go to overtime.
