ASC&DC 2013-14 Kick Off

The Amalgamated Squash and Chowder House Development Club held its annual Fall Tournament this past Sunday, 29 September 2013. This fall's tournament, aptly titled the 'Beam buster' after the club's iconic beams across the court that have been the ruin of many a good rally, saw youth making significant inroads in the draw but ultimately mainstay Marc Ducharme emerged as the champion in a fiercely contested final with Josh Houle, 3 games to 2. In the 3rd / 4th place playoff, Henry Spindler was victorious 3 games to 0 against a weary Nils Lundberg. In the consolation final, Russ Cobb, a newcomer to the ASC&D club, beat Joe Greenwood in three hotly contested games, 3 to 0. Joe not only just joined the club but also is a recent convert to squash progressing at a remarkable pace. The finals began with Marc Ducharme winning the first two long games by 11-8 and 11-9 against Josh Houle, a former professional soccer player at FC Sachsen Leipzing in Germany. Marc, a seasoned veteran 4.0 rated amateur veteran (5.5 to 6.0 ratings are usually reserved for top club pros) who has competed in the amateur division of the Tournament of Champions in New York City, had lost only one game before arriving at the final. But, the momentum definitely swung in Josh's favor for the next two games as he bested Marc by the counts of 11-3 and 11-4. His second game victory was punctuated by a spectacular behind the back shot for a winner. But, Marc resumed his smart form increasing the length of his rails in extremely long points that tested the endurance of both competitors. He won the decisive 5th and last game, 11-3. The 5 game marathon match ran nearly went 50 minutes. All the participants in this fall's tournament enjoyed spirited competition with fair play and great camaraderie.
